Community based modeling and evaluation of cartographic sign-systems

The aim of this thesis is to combine the possibilities of web2.0 technologies with the generation of web map styles in order to transform community specific mental map schemata (learned and expected representation of maps) into community adapted cartographic rules (map styles) within a collaborative process.
The joined elaboration of map styles shall enable a more efficient perception and thus a more effective acting with the produced map representations within a community. This work focuses on the development of methods, which allows the derivation of prototypical map styles out of a certain number of individual produced map styles. Furthermore an empirical evaluation of prototypical map styles and an exemplary implementation of a system for community based cartographic map styling will be carried out. Therefore standardized webservices (OGC WMS/WFS) and formats (OGC SLD/SE) will explicitly be used to gain sustainability with respect to the future usability of the results.
