The Institute of Geography is expanding its assistance to graduates and its work with alumni in general. The purpose of this initiative is to promote the exchange of experience and information among the Institute of Geography, current students, new graduates and all our alumni in the work world.

Goals

  • provide contact opportunities for geographers after their graduation
  • share experiences related to professional questions
  • develop new fields of work for our graduates
  • arrange internships and final theses and degree projects for current students
  • support the Institute of Geography in the implementation of practice- and job-related events

Activities

Alumni-Meeting:
Once a year we invite you to an alumni meeting held concurrent with the graduation ceremony. Here you can maintain your contact with your friends and acquaintances of university days and with the staff of the Institute.

Newsletter:
About once or twice a year we send out our alumni newsletter with information on events, research projects, publications and further current topics. The newsletter will be delivered by email.

Job-oriented events:
We would be happy to gain your support as a speaker at a variety of events! These lecture series, seminars, workshops and field trips are to assist students – following introductory course work in the discipline and its methods – by increasing their awareness of possible fields of work, by communicating experiential knowledge and by informing them of any additional qualifications which may be necessary.

Job portal:
Is your company looking for a committed student as an intern or a recent graduate as a young professional? We will include your job postings in the newsletter of the internship initiative (Praktikumsinitiative Geographie/ PIG) and post them on the notice board at the Institute.

Public relations:
The publication pdf „Tätigkeitsfelder für Geographen“ is prepared through the colloquium „Geographie in verschiedenen Berufsfeldern“. Including e-posters of work-oriented field trips to companies in the region as well as Columbus articles from professional geographers, this compilation of the varying work fields of geographers will be further expanded in the coming semesters. It is to be a help to prospective students as well as students nearing professional life and in addition aims to contribute to the public’s understanding of Geography.

The editorial team of the Geography student journal Columbus regularly presents current fields of research and activity for geographers and publishes reports on various internships and professional life. You are welcome to give an account of your professional career and experiences!

Participate

Register in the alumni data base! An e-mail to alumni@geog.uni-heidelberg.de will do.

We will need the following information:

  • first and last name (birth name if applicable)
  • contact details (email)
  • year of graduation
  • current field of work and job title
  • contact details of your employer
  • information on former employers, if applicable
  • a brief description of how you found your position (f. ex. through an internship, job posting, friends/acquaintances, etc.)

You will then receive our newsletter and invitations to the alumni meetings by email.

Do you have ideas, comments or questions concerning our planned activities?
We look forward to your suggestions!

The Institute of Geography also collaborates with the Heidelberg Alumni International (HAI), the central alumni initiative of the university. HAI is responsible for the development of the worldwide alumni network as well as the expansion of regional and scientific alumni groups. Since 1996, HAI fosters professional and personal contacts between the alumni and their university – for example with HAInet, the Heidelberg network in the internet, an alumni magazine as well as a free University of Heidelberg e-mail address. These and further services are available to all alumni of the university.
A registration with HAI is the only requirement.
