Dr. Thomas Neise

Since October 2023 Dr. Thomas Neise holds the position of interim professor of Economic and Social Geography. Previously, he worked as a research associate at the Osnabrück University (currently on leave) and the University of Cologne. He was also a guest researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. He studied Human Geography, Business Studies and Economics in Potsdam and Jena. From 2020 to 2023, he was Managing Editor of Standort - Zeitschrift für angewandte Geographie. From 2024, Thomas Neise will take over the position of Treasurer at Verband für Geographie an deutschsprachigen Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen (VGDH).

Research Interests

His research interests focus on environmental economic geography. In particular, he is interested in firms’ adaptation strategies to extreme weather events and climate change as well as risks in global production networks. Furthermore, he conducts research on resilience strategies in the hospitality industry (cruise industry, restaurants and bars) and medical technology, as well as the methodological integration of behavioral economics into economic geography. His research interests focus on environmentally oriented economic geography. In particular, he is interested in entrepreneurial adaptation strategies to extreme weather events and climate change as well as risks in global production networks. Furthermore, he investigates resilience strategies in gastronomy and medical technology as well as the methodological integration of behavioral economics into economic geography.
The geographic focus of his research is East and Southeast Asia (especially Japan and Indonesia) and Germany.
