Michael Handke has been scientific employee at the research group for Economic and Social Geography since December 2008. After his studies of Economic Geography, Spatial and Landscape Planning at the LMU Munich he worked at the Department of Human Geography of the University of Frankfurt until 2007. There he wrote his doctoral thesis on financial geography with Prof. E.W. Schamp. Michael Handke was an employee in the research project on the service-industry location Bavaria under the supervision of Prof. J. Glückler und fulfilled teaching assignments at the Catholic University of Eichstätt as well as at the University of Applied Sciences for Economy and Management of Frankfurt. He is the head of a research project for the institutionalisation of the tourist industry in Columbia which he realises together with colleagues from the Department of Human Geography of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. In Columbia Michael Handke holds two lectures. Amongst other things he lectures on the topic “Financial flexibility in financial relations” at the scientific faculty of the Columbian private university Externado.
Research interests
His research interests focus on the financing of companies in a spatial perspective (financial geography). Knowledge processes in companies as well as the structuring of business activities by institutions and routines are the focus of his empirical works. Michael Handke analyses the development of supplier relations in local product systems in Germany (financial services), Spain (plastics industry) and Columbia (tourist industry). His current research project in Columbia reflects his interest in geographical developmental research.
