Mobility of highly skilled Germans within the system of the United Nations Organisation and between the external labour market and the United Nations Organisation, 1973-2003

The international mobility of highly skilled workers, international networks and Germany’s integration into the system of international organisations are currently important political and scientific issues. However, there has not yet been analysis of the patterns and processes of movements of the highly skilled within the sector of international civil service. This research project is designed to investigate the (spatial, social and professional) mobility of high-skilled Germans within the system of the United Nations Organisation and between the latter and the external labour market between 1973 and 2003. In particular, attention will be given to the institutional, political, social, cultural and professional contexts of mobility processes in the context of international organisations. Since one of the main goals of this study is to provide an overall picture of the mobility processes of highly skilled international civil servants, the results of these processes like the establishment of career networks should also be investigated.
