Geoinformatics / GIScience (GIS)
In the research group for Geoinformatics (Prof. Dr. Alexander Zipf) we conduct basic and applied research in the field of GIScience and Geoinformatics. One focus is on the investigation of user-generated geoinformation (VGI, crowdsourcing, citizen science).
To this end we develop innovative methods and analysis procedures in areas such as humanitarian aid (disaster management), Smart Mobility and Big Spatial Data Analytics (VGI data quality, etc.). The Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT gGmbH), an affiliated institute at the University of Heidelberg, allows us to translate our research findings into practical solutions. In addition we support teaching in our geography degree programs in the form of a wide range of courses - in the Master of Geography it is possible to choose a designated focus on “Geoinformatics”.
Current information about our work can also be found on our blog, at GibHub, on our publications page and on our social channels on Mastodon, Bluesky and Youtube.
Staff

Everyone in our working group helps to turn research, teaching and knowledge transfer into an overall concept that is more than just the sum of individual courses. All employees contribute to this, from student assistants to doctoral students and postdocs to the secretariat.
Research

In contrast to accidental discovery, research is the systematic search for new findings and their documentation and publication. Here you can get an overview of our research projects with all our topics.
Online Services

Online services are electronic information and communication services offered on the Internet. We have regularly developed and continue to develop new services, most of which have to do with digital maps, their interpretation and improvement.
Teaching

Our aim is to integrate our research topics into appealing, innovative university teaching, to impart qualitative methodological knowledge and thus to inspire students of the various degree programs with enthusiasm for geoinformatics topics and issues.
Events

The GIScience research group regularly organizes or hosts various conferences and workshops. The events page gives you an overview of the topics and dates.
