Hydrology and Climatology
The Hydrology and Climatology Working Group (Prof. Dr. Lucas Menzel) combines basic geographical research – particularly in the areas of climate and water – with interdisciplinary and application-oriented research questions. Basic research focuses primarily on the analysis of physiographic systems and processes. The emphasis here is on water and energy fluxes at the interface between soil, vegetation, and the atmosphere.
This encompasses a range of interrelationships that extend far beyond disciplinary research, such as the effects of human interventions on the delicate interactions between permafrost, soil hydrological processes, and water availability in forests, or the influences of vegetation and land use on the regional climate and water fluxes in landscapes across various ecozones of the Earth. Field surveys are conducted using a wide variety of measurement techniques.
