Institute Physical Geography
Physical geography is the natural science part of geography. It describes, analyzes, and explains processes and phenomena, including human-environment interactions in the Earth's overall system with its various subsystems.

Using scientific methods, it investigates geofactors (including relief/shape of the Earth's surface, climate, soil, water, vegetation) and the development of landscapes, their geological and historical heritage in the field and in the Geomorphology and Geoecology laboratory as well as in the Heidelberg Luminescence Laboratory, and describes/models past and present ecosystem relationships.
The main areas of research in Physical Geography in Heidelberg include environmental research, Hydrology, Climatology, Quaternary research, Geomorphology, Geochronology, Soil Geography, arid zone research, and Geoarchaeology.
