Before being drawn into the beauty of AI, it is essential to establish and follow best ethical practices to guide our work in AI for Earth Observation (AI4EO). The convergence of artificial intelligence and Earth observation technologies holds great promise for addressing global challenges such as environmental monitoring, disaster response, and climate change analysis. However, this rapid integration demands a careful examination of the responsible dimensions of AI in these fields.
In this talk, I will provide a few examples in which the intersection of AI and EO plays a central role, but I will look at them from the viewpoint of responsible AI practices. These examples cover a variety of subjects, such as AI for social good, geoprivacy preservation, resource-efficient AI development using weak supervision, and community engagement, transparency, and fairness through open science and benchmarking, ensuring that ethical considerations remain at the forefront of these advancements.
