This interdisciplinary approach enables you to analyze complex societal and environmental challenges from multiple angles and to develop innovative solutions. A special emphasis is on method innovation and experimentation.

Why Geography?

Geography is one of the most diverse academic disciplines, as it combines scientific, social, and—at Heidelberg—technical research questions and methods. Many of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century—such as climate change, globalization, desertification, sustainable urban and regional development, digitalization, and migration—are key topics within the geography curriculum. Another distinctive feature of studying geography is the emphasis on field trips and practice-oriented courses, which form an essential part of the program.

Why Geography in Heidelberg?

At Heidelberg, you will benefit from a well-balanced curriculum covering human geography, physical geography, and geoinformatics. A particular emphasis is placed on methodological innovation and experimentation: you’ll have access to a wide range of modern laboratories and research infrastructures, including a luminescence lab, a geomorphology and geoecology lab, the LiDAR Lab, the TdLab Geography, as well as mobile eye-tracking systems, VR headsets, and the interactive GeoMediaStudio. You will also benefit from the powerful computing and service infrastructure of the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT). In addition, practice-based collaboration is a key element of the program: external partners are regularly involved in teaching to address real-world questions and to help students build valuable professional networks. In Heidelberg, geography students also have considerable freedom to explore and specialize in topics that they develop an interest in during their studies.
