Transdisciplinary geographical research TdLab Geography

Societal challenges such as climate change require interdisciplinary approaches to basic research and application. Although geography combines natural and social science approaches, interdisciplinary approaches alone are often insufficient for developing efficient, practical solutions.

Hands with world map

This is where transdisciplinary (td) geographical research comes in. Td research involves academics, as well as stakeholders from administration, agencies and civil society. Together, these groups develop concepts and solutions for complex real-world challenges. This co-design principle ensures that real-world perspectives are appropriately integrated into research projects.

Founded in 2018, the TdLab Geography applies the transdisciplinary approach to geographical questions. Its work focuses on climate change adaptation, mitigation, education for sustainable development, and transformative environmental research.

Research

Transdisciplinary geographical research is an innovative approach that breaks down the barriers between traditional disciplines in order to solve complex social and ecological problems. The aim is to develop comprehensive solutions that are scientifically robust and practical. Such research promotes dialogue between science and society, contributing to the development of sustainable strategies that address the diverse challenges of our time.

Teaching

The TdLab Geography team incorporates transdisciplinary approaches into its teaching in order to prepare students to address global challenges. The team offers seminars, internships and excursions based on the latest research findings. These activities promote education for sustainable development (ESD), empowering students to make responsible decisions in a global context. Nicole Aeschbach is also designing an additional cross-sectional qualification in sustainability at the Heidelberg School of Education (HSE) for future teachers at Heidelberg University and the Heidelberg University of Education.
